Home Sweet Home
While my time is WCW was short, it was not short of highlight moment and the week of the New Blood Rising PPV was certainly one of them. This PPV was in Vancouver Canada and I was coming off winning my three championships and adorning the championship belts with Canadian Flags. It was without a doubt the most over (popular) I’ve ever been in my entire life. Actually there were a couple house show loops in the Maritimes during my WWE days that might rival it, but if I can borrow a line from Hammy the Hamster from Along the River Bank, “That’s another story.” Does anyone remember that old show, or did I just date myself something awful? Re-reading this story now I’m reminded of an additional story of that weekend I’d like to share before we get to it. In addition to the PPV we did Nitro and Thunder in Kelowna and Kamloops respectively. At the TV tapings Chris Jericho managed to get a mutual friend of ours booked as an extra for the show as try out. The mutual friend was a guy named Lenny Olson, who some of you might know as Dr. Luther from his strong run for FMW in Japan. Lenny broke in a year or two before Chris and I and is a great guy, and a very talented worker.
After the first show we went out to grab some food and on the drive to the restaurant I was talking about how weird it was to be so over. This was a completely new thing to me, seeing that ever since I started working on TV and getting “famous” I’d always been a heel. I was trying to avoid sounding too full of myself but had to talk to someone about how awesome it was to be so popular. I don’t remember exactly what I said but Len’s response made me laugh so hard, I will remember it forever. Len turned and looked at me and matter of factly told me, “Dude, you’re so over in this town, I could get laid for just knowing you.” I’m not sure if he actually managed to, but if he did more power to him, glad I could help. I was married with two kids, so someone should at least be able to benefit from my very brief popularity. A week later I was back in the US and the best Len could hope for there was to get spat on for knowing me.
